Metro Advises Alternate Transportation During Work on Orange, Blue & Silver Lines

Things are about to get hairy on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines, thanks to Metro's latest repair project

For 16 consecutive days, Metro will conduct around-the-clock construction on part of those lines to rebuild and repair track infrastructure.

From August 11 to August 26, the Orange and Silver lines will be single tracking – operating every 20 minutes – between McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations, "resulting in extensive delays and crowding," WMATA says.

Blue Line trains will only run between Franconia-Springfield and Arlington Cemetery, and additional Yellow Line trains will provide service to riders during rush hour between Franconia-Springfield and Greenbelt.

If you're traveling between Virginia and Downtown D.C., WMATA suggests taking the Yellow Line instead, as additional Yellow Line trains will run every 16 minutes during rush hour into D.C.

On the weekends of August 11 and 12 and August 25 and 26, Farragut West, McPherson Square, and the lower level platform at Metro Center (Orange, Silver and Blue lines) will be closed.

"All Orange, Blue and Silver line customers are encouraged to use alternate transportation and to only use Metrorail if you have no other option," WMATA says.

During the project, Silver and Orange Line trains will run every 20 minutes. Blue Line trains will run every 16 minutes during rush hour, every 12 minutes midday and evenings, and every 20 minutes after 10 p.m.

Check out travel alternatives from WMATA below:

  • If you travel between Virginia and Downtown DC use the Yellow Line.
  • If you travel between the Rosslyn and Pentagon stations, use the Yellow Line and transfer to/from the Orange or Silver lines at L'Enfant Plaza.
  • Consider using Red, Yellow or Green Line stations that may be within walking distance of your destination. For example:
  • If you typically use Smithsonian, Federal Triangle or Metro Center, it may be quicker to use L'Enfant Plaza or Archives stations on the Green and Yellow lines and walk.
  • If you typically use Farragut West or McPherson Sq, it may be quicker to use the Red Line and exit at Farragut North and walk.
  • If you park and ride from Orange and Silver line stations in Virginia, consider using other county or Yellow/Blue line Park & Ride facilities.
  • Orange, Blue and Silver line riders from Virginia consider riding select trains on the VRE Manassas Line (via Burke Center) or VRE Fredericksburg Line (via Franconia Springfield or Alexandria) to Crystal City, L'Enfant Plaza or Union Station.
  • Orange, Blue and Silver line riders in Maryland consider taking the MARC Penn Line (via New Carrollton) or MARC Camden Line (via Greenbelt) downtown.
  • If you park and ride from Orange, Blue and Silver line stations in Maryland, consider using Green Line Park & Ride facilities.
  • Consider Metrobus or other local bus providers.
