Activists Lay 7,000 Pairs of Shoes on Capitol Lawn in Memorial to Children Killed by Gun Violence

March 13, 2018

Starting at sunrise on Tuesday, March 13, activists carefully placed thousands of shoes on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol, one pair for each child lost to gun violence since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in December 2012.

“We want to represent everyone who’s been lost,” Andrew Nazdin told NBC Washington. “We want to bring the tragedy that’s been felt in communities across the country right to Congress’ doorstep.”

The Monument for Our Kids was on display from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parents of children killed by gun violence as well as survivors attented the memorial dedication.

Afterward, activists will donate the 7,000 pairs of shoes to local homeless shelters and charities, NBC reports.
