Get to Know BCB Artist ‘A Great Big World’

by Cristina Mayer

The members of ‘A Great Big World’ talked to 94.7 Fresh FM about the band’s upcoming performance at Breast Cancer Bites, how they decided on their name and the TV show that launched their careers.

Chad Vaccarino and Ian Axel met as music business majors at New York University and became fast friends.

Before officially becoming “A Great Big World” in 2012, they wrote and produced music featured in popular TV shows like “One Tree Hill” and “The Amazing Race.”

They describe their music as positive and uplifting.

“We believe we have a responsibility with the songs that we’re writing that we only inject them with love.  It’s all about living your life and just beaming love out in the world.”

Axel and Vaccarino credit having the right connections along with some really good luck…

Their hit song, “This is the New Year,” ended up in the hands of “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy.

“A week before the episode aired, we still had no idea. And then Ryan Murphy leaked the video on YouTube and then we were like ‘here we go.'”

As for their name, the band points to song lyrics in one of their songs as insight.

“That lyric is ‘it’s a great big world and there is no need to cry.”

“We write positive music and we wanted a name that was larger than life, and a name that could be an umbrella under which we could do whatever we want to.  It just felt right.”

A Great Big World has toured with “Glee” star Matthew Morrison, as well as Ingrid Michelson and Five For Fighting.

Five for Fighting will join A Great Big World at this year’s Breast Cancer Bites event at the Artisphere in Rosslyn, Va.
